My Background

I have worked as a photographer, educator, restauranteur and designer.

In all of these fields I have learned the power of empathetic thinking and have gained understanding of how well-designed systems can help people. As a designer I have expanded my focus on how I can contribute making the world better for other human beings.

My experience in photography, education and hospitality gives me a unique perspective which I draw upon in my design practice.

GOALS AND INTENTIONS

I’m passionate about where technology, design and social change intersect.

I’m passionate about accessibility and committed to creating inclusive digital experiences that work for everyone. I thrive in collaborative teams and value being involved in the entire design-to-build process, combining my skills and experiences to help design a better world.

MOTIVATION & INSPIRATION

Photography & Visual Art

I got my first 35 film camera in 1999 and I haven’t stopped taking pictures since. Photography was the first tool for self expression that allowed me to visually describe the world around me, and became my pathway into the larger world of visual art. My path took me to earn a MA in Photography and Media Art. Click here 🔗 to view my photography website.

TEACHING

Growing up I had teachers that helped me and left lasting impressions on me

I did not have the opportunity to learn how to be creative as a young person, so I try to share my experiences with young students whenever I can, especially how it relates to image-making. I am passionate about teaching and am interested in how design and technology can help shape the future of education. I have spent most of my time teaching at The International Ceneter of Photography 🔗 and The Point 🔗 as well as in the CUNY system.

LIFE EXPERIENCE

I incorporate the lessons learned from hospitality and service in my design practice.

I grew up in restaurants. My mother’s family was in the restaurant and grocery business in South Louisiana. I have worked in over 15 establishments across 3 states from the position of dishwasher, line-cook, server, bartender, manager and owner.

Through this industry I learned from a young age the value of hard work, as well as the importance of the relationships created between employees, employers and customers. I recently left a partnership in a restaurant in Brooklyn to pursue design full time.

My diverse background has honed my ability to connect, adapt, and solve problems, in order to help create meaningful solutions.
